That\u2019s quite an achievement for any professional racing driver, especially for one who was the 2016 NHRA Funny Car World Champion. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment, which is exactly why Ron&#8217;s long-standing sponsor, NAPA Auto Parts, will also be along for the ride.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back at the 2018 NHRA season, Ron claimed victory at three events and finished fourth in points for the season. Along the way, he accumulated an impressive points lead, but as in racing, it\u2019s a moving target with 15 other competitors just as determined as you to go to the next round and win.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21702 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dodgegarage.com\/news-api\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG002.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG002-602x327.jpg 602w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG002-768x417.jpg 768w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG002-700x381.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d have to say another great year, you know; we fell short of the championship, of course, but I think a lot of teams would love to have the year we had with our NAPA team,\u201d said Ron. \u201cWe were a little disappointed that we fell in the countdown with just a couple races and that really kind of hurt us in the final points, but to say that we were in contention once again is always a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, Ron always strives to do better, not just for himself, but also for his sponsors and fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were always talked about in the championship, so I think that 2018 was a little bit of a letdown for us.\u00a0We had a chance going into a couple races toward the end of the season to win a championship, but it just wasn\u2019t in the cards,\u201d said Ron.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21697 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dodgegarage.com\/news-api\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG003.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG003-614x248.jpg 614w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG003-768x310.jpg 768w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ron-Capps-Preseason_IMG003-700x282.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With 2018 in the rearview mirror, it was time to move on and start planning on the upcoming 2019 season. For Ron, it\u2019s both a physical and mental workout to stay focused as a driver and not lose sight of what needs to be done before heading to Pomona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve spent a lot of time as usual in the gym trying to stay physically fit by playing racquetball. It\u2019s a great physical activity and with the ball travelling 150-plus mph, it helps keep my hand-eye coordination up along with keeping me in good overall shape,\u201d remarked Ron.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to staying in shape during the off-season, the team was hard at work in the shop preparing the new Dodge Charger SRT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Hellcat Funny Car bodies. The DSR chassis guys are really working hard in putting a new car together for us,\u201d commented Ron. \u201cWe front-halved one of the cars from last year, so we\u2019re going to have two great cars to start off the season with. We also have a third car that\u2019s ready to run if we need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the DSR NAPA Auto Parts transporter rolls into the pits at Auto Club Raceway, Ron and his team will be ready to rumble with the competition. They\u2019ll have a new car that should give them an advantage over the rest of the field jockeying for a good qualifying position and looking to go rounds during eliminations at the NHRA Winternationals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all worked hard on getting the first Charger [SRT] Hellcat body on Hagan\u2019s car last year. The SRT engineers really worked on the front end and the balance of the car. We need to prepare ourselves ahead of time for what\u2019s going to happen in the countdown. I think with Rahn Tobler (crew chief \u2013 NAPA Auto Parts Funny Car), there\u2019s nobody better at doing that. I feel like the team has developed a really great chemistry,\u201d said Ron.<\/p>\n<p>With the historic NHRA Winternationals just a week away, it has many wonderful memories for Ron, especially since he has attended almost every race at Pomona since he was a kid. It marks the moment when Rahn Tobler and I became a notch better together as a team. We had a lot going on with the balance of the car and my driving, but we learned a lot that Winternationals weekend.
