With Roadkill Nights powered by Dodge now a\ngiant two-day event the weekend before the Woodward Dream Cruise, I wasn\u2019t sure\nif it would actually affect the big event\u2019s attendance. I thought maybe the\ntraffic would be a little lighter, the parking lots a bit more empty, the cars\nnot quite as cool. I was completely wrong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting up early on the morning of the Dream\nCruise, then driving from Detroit to Pontiac and back is my usual tradition,\nbasically running a lap of Woodward Avenue before the madness ensues. Dutch\nGirls donuts are the best, and they\u2019re right on the iconic Woodward, so of\ncourse I stopped and got a box full of assorted donuts to keep me fed along the\ntrek. Some people don\u2019t allow food in their cars. There is almost always food\nin my Dodge Challenger SRT\u00ae<\/sup> Demon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, I got a late start; it was already\npast 9 a.m. when I fired up Holy Smoke (my SRT Demon). By the time I hit 9 mile road,\nthere were cruisers everywhere. The drive north on Woodward wasn\u2019t too bad, but\nat the loop in Pontiac, where the road loops around the city\u2019s downtown before\ncontinuing south, it was bumper to bumper, inching along. Instead of completing\nmy lap, I checked in to the HEMI\u2019nsanity lot, where Dodge had also set up shop.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a Mopar\u00ae<\/sub>-only lot, and the quality of cars\nwas top notch. The organizers did a terrific job of filing cars in and out as\nenthusiasts would leave to cruise for a bit, then come back to chill, grab some\nfood and watch some burnouts. And man, there were some burnouts! While some\ncities were cracking down on any sort of tomfoolery, Pontiac welcomed it. In\nthe far left lane that ran along the HEMI\u2019nsanity and Dodge lot, the concrete\nroad looked like Lapeer Dragway\u2019s burnout box. Car after car pulled up, staged\nand created massive amounts of smoke and noise. It was glorious. When I was\nsaying goodbye, one of the event\u2019s organizers, Paul Georges, replied with\n\u201cYou\u2019re gonna do a burnout on your way out, yeah?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul let me into the lot, so of course I had\nto oblige. There isn\u2019t an easy exit onto Woodward from where we were, so I\nbacktracked through Pontiac so I could pull up in the burnout lane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I eased up in front of the crowd, engaged the SRT Demon\u2019s line-lock, and gave a bit of throttle while smoke filled the inside of the car. My finger came off of the \u201cOK\u201d button that holds the front brakes while keeping the rear brakes disengaged, and I rolled out of the throttle. I\u2019m almost embarrassed to say that I put over 9,000 miles on the car before finally using it in that moment. Now I can\u2019t stop using it, and my rear tires are losing tread like Lebron James’ forehead lost hair before it magically grew back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
