He proceeded to qualify his HEMI<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-powered machine second on the timing sheets with a 3.945-second run at 325.61 mph and earn two valuable bonus points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening round of eliminations saw the 2016 Funny Car\nchamp dispose of No. 13 seed Blake Alexander while No. 3 qualifier and points\nleader Hagan was upset by No. 12 seed J.R. The two\ncompetitors battled closely the entire length of the track with a solid\n3.919-second run at 329.83 mph by Capps to beat Pedregon\u2019s 3.920 sec.\/326.63\nmph pass, collect his 800<sup>th<\/sup> career elimination round victory and,\nfor a tenth time this season, advance to the semifinals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dodgegarage.com\/news-api\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2142-01642.jpg\" alt=\"Ron Capps drag racing\" class=\"wp-image-56823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2142-01642.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2142-01642-576x384.jpg 576w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2142-01642-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/test.api.dodgegarage.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2142-01642-992x661.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With championship implications in play among the top-five\ncontenders, Capps lined up his Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat against Todd, who was\nlooking to improve on his fifth place standing and tighten up the points race.\nAs he did against his previous two adversaries, Capps was quicker off the\nstarting line but found himself fighting to keep his racecar in the lane. By\nmid-track it drifted to the centerline where it made contact with a timing\nblock and nullified his run. Pedregon lead early, never trailed and recorded his quickest pass of the\nweekend, 3.964 seconds at 294.11 mph, en route to his 12<sup>th<\/sup> first\nround win of the year, the most for him since 2015 (15). The three-time Funny Car\nchamp drove it straight down the lane for a quick 3.958-second elapsed time\nrun, the exact same as his best qualifying effort, but unfortunately his\nopponent\u2019s winning 3.924-second pass ended any hopes of advancing further on\nthis race day. Her No. 6 seeded position paired her up for an opening round contest against No. 9 seed Spencer Massey.
