John Dodge, the eldest of the Dodge brothers, was born in <strong>1864<\/strong>, while his younger brother Horace was born four years later in <strong>1868.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"418\" height=\"519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dodgegarage.com\/news-api\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/HistoryofDodgeBrand_IMG002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72043\"\/><figcaption> Dodge brothers\u2019 portrait &#8211; John (left) and Horace (right) <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During their younger years, the idea of fast cars wasn\u2019t on the Dodge brothers\u2019 radar, but instead, in <strong>1896<\/strong>, Horace was applying for patents for a dirt-resistant bicycle bearing. (Right): The logo on the Evans &amp; Dodge bicycle.\u00a0Horace and John Dodge worked with Fred Evans to sell the new bicycle featuring the Dodge-patented ball bearing system. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Already mechanically inclined, in <strong>1901<\/strong>, the Dodge brothers started what would be the largest machine shop in Detroit through their budding bicycle business. A short time later, in <strong>1902<\/strong>, the brothers pivoted to supplying engines, transmissions and axles to major customers like Oldsmobile and Northern. The following year, in <strong>1903<\/strong>, a new partnership emerged with automobile industry newcomer Ford Motor Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"458\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dodgegarage.com\/news-api\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/HistoryofDodgeBrand_IMG004.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72045\"\/><figcaption> The Evans &amp; Dodge bicycle was made possible by a ball bearing patent awarded to the Dodge brothers in 1896. The E and D bike was available for several years at the turn of the century. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1914,<\/strong> the brothers decided it was time to part ways with Ford and introduce their own car. Known for &#8220;dependability,\u201d&nbsp;Dodge also offered\na &#8220;winter car&#8221; with a removable hardtop and snap-on side glass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next five years, the brothers produced commercial, civilian and military trucks, along with a 1,155mm (about 3.79 ft) gun recoil system for the Allied armies during WWI. Both John and Horace passed away from influenza. At that time, Dodge was\nthe second best-selling car in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <strong>1920s<\/strong>, the Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company opened its first Canadian plant, surpassed 200,000 vehicles made in a calendar year, produced its 1 millionth Dodge automobile and was acquired by the Chrysler Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"520\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dodgegarage.com\/news-api\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/HistoryofDodgeBrand_IMG008.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72049\"\/><figcaption> The Courtesy Reception Room at the Dodge Main plant in Hamtramck, Michigan, circa 1920s. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>1930<\/strong>, Dodge began production of its first eight-cylinder engine and offered its first factory car radio. It was later reinstated in 1952.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the first half of the<strong> 1940s,<\/strong> the automobile industry pivoted to help manufacture items needed to help the war efforts. By <strong>1945, <\/strong>Dodge was back to producing vehicles, making its 5 millionth automobile in <strong>1946. <\/strong>The full-size Dodge Meadowbrook and Coronet were introduced in <strong>1949.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"331\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dodgegarage.com\/news-api\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/HistoryofDodgeBrand_IMG011.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72028\"\/><figcaption> In 1943, under license from Pratt-Whitney, Dodge built B-29 aircraft engines at its Chicago plant. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fun Fact: The Dodge brand turned its production to radar units, Sperry Gyro compasses and engines for B-29 military aircrafts to help with war efforts during WWII.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>1950, <\/strong>Dodge had launched its first hardtop coupe, the Diplomat, and it was the first time a Dodge vehicle entered a NASCAR race. In <strong>1952,<\/strong> the &#8220;Red Ram&#8221; HEMI<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> engine was introduced, the first V8 in a Dodge. In the mid-1950s, the Dodge Firearrow Roadster and Dodge La Femme coupe were revealed. The revolutionary Dodge Caravan minivan was introduced in <strong>1984<\/strong>. The \u201980s ended strong for the Dodge brand with the introduction of the Dynasty in <strong>1988<\/strong>, which became the company\u2019s best seller. A big year for the brand, <strong>2003 <\/strong>came with the introduction of the Dodge Magnum, Kahuna and Avenger concept cars, as well as the Tomahawk, a Viper V10-engine-powered motorcycle. The Dodge Caliber concept was unveiled, and the Dodge Magnum was introduced in <strong>2005<\/strong>. By <strong>2006, <\/strong>a new version of the Charger was introduced, bringing back an iconic nameplate and HEMI engine power.
